Humble Design: From Homeless to Hopeful

humble design

Will you help us provide dignity for a familty in need and support the worthy fight against homelessness? Is there a special story or family that stands out in your mind? All of the families we help have amazing stories one way or another, but I remember a few that stood out to me because of the families’ untold sacrifices. One woman had three children and her husband died of cancer.

I was born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in San Diego. I grew up in a household where it was extremely important to get a good education and to choose a field where you could succeed in life. When I told my parents I wanted to be an artist, they double-gulped but, ultimately, got behind the idea and sent me to art programs.

When people around you are asked for help, they become engaged in your mission and will help you carry the ball down the field. When things look bleak, look toward your team. Surround yourself with people you like — they will become your safety net as well as your staff. Designer Jamie Konker loves the opportunity to share her talents as shown in the before and after shots above. It’s pretty simple, one gets to do something they love and see a positive impact directly,” Konker says. “I so appreciate and admire the Humble Design ethos of treating each client with respect and recognizing their situation as unique.

When her sister died a year later she took in her three kids and cared for them as if they were her own. She worked two jobs to keep the family afloat, and when we furnished her house, she gave the larger room to the kids and slept in the basement. She cried for the first time in years when she saw those kids jump up and down with happiness. The next day we posted her video online and a person commented “Why did she have six kids if she couldn’t pay for them? ” I cringe at all the assumptions people make about poverty in this country. A vast population in America is just one paycheck or one emergency away from calamity.

I have always been a big believer that my family and children come first. I will see my kids when they get home from school. I might work well into the night after they go to bed, but I need to look them in the eye and ask about their day.

And it dawned on me, even if I could replicate the quality of his work, I’d never make it as a painter. And that was the best move I ever made because the first class I signed up for was advertising, where I met my husband, Rob. Rob moved down to Miami for a job; I stayed in New York and graduated, then followed him to Miami where we both worked in advertising for nine years. I moved to Michigan in 2008 with my husband Rob and two children, Henson and Tuesday. We instantly felt a strong kinship to Detroit and the desire to help the community was none that we had known before. Thank you for signing up for our monthly newsletter.

I feel so lucky to be able to work with my husband on Humble Design, including our recent national expansion. I am also grateful for my staff of 16 employees who work hard to make Humble Design successful every day. After the success of opening in Chicago last year, we have decided to expand to Dearborn, Seattle and San Diego in 2018. Humble Design designers, Lisa and Susan, meet with a family they decorated a home for.

So building within these tighter parameters presented an additional set of concerns. LightFoot was built for an adventurous solo traveler and her dog. We wanted the van to live large without compromising any features, nor storage. Where do you like to shop or local designers you support? ModMart for furniture, SHE stores, Intermix and Caruso Caruso for me and John Varvatos for Rob. I’m not a native Detroiter, but this community embraced me with both arms.

My parents also instilled in me the value of giving back — always emphasizing the importance of having empathy — walking in other people’s shoes. I suppose that’s part of the reason big transitions and decisions have never been hard for me to make. In the summer before my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to go to Israel, and as it turned out, I stayed for my entire senior year. In Israel, I felt connected in a way I had never been before. I graduated and went to New York City to study painting and drawing at the School of Visual Arts. One day, I met an artist on the street selling these amazing paintings for just $200.

I am in the unusual position of loving what I do, but not needing to do it. We don’t have a bottom line, or stockholders. We need to love what we do with all of our hearts and take breaks when we don’t. Did you face any challenges when starting the business? Of course funding is a challenge for most nonprofits, but our biggest challenge was that Humble Design became a logistics nightmare.

John Doyle is considered an icon in Philadelphia. The beloved McGillin's bartender is credited with being a matchmaker, saving marriages and pouring countless drinks while working at Philadelphia's oldest continually operating tavern. Billing itself as the bar that “outlasted the Civil War and even Prohibition,” McGillin’s Old Ale House, the oldest continuously operating bar in Philadelphia, is a major point of pride for natives of the city.

The celebration begins this Saturday at McGillin’s and culminates next St. Patrick’s Day, which will be Doyle’s 50th at the bar, said Christopher Mullins Jr., co-owner of McGillin’s. But his big break came when the downstairs bartender broke a bottle over an unruly customer’s head (the patron had reached behind the bar to serve himself). Doyle had to cover the bar when his coworker was hauled out by police in handcuffs. Inspired by his new gig, Doyle attended a six-week course at Ronnie’s Bartending School (he still keeps a tiny laminated copy of his 1975 diploma in his wallet) and began tending the bar upstairs at McGillin’s. From 1995 until its closure in 2020, the beers were brewed by Stoudt’s Brewing. At one time, McGillin’s sold more Stoudt’s beer than any other bar in PA. Catherine “Ma” McGillin, who had taken over operation of the establishment after her husband passed away in 1901, managed to carry the bar through Prohibition by hiring a chef. While young 20-somethings fill the place for karaoke on Friday nights, happy hours at McGgillin’s are typically filled with a very diverse crowd. There is a ship bell and a cow bell behind the bar which the bartenders ring when they get a great tip. They also ring it to "gong" or "boo" a bad karaoke singer. During a Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Union, or Philadelphia Flyers game, it can be expected that the bell will be rung when the home team scores. Since its inception in 2009, Humble has turned almost 900 empty houses into clean, dignified and welcoming homes — a simple but powerful idea.

In 2009, Treger met a recently homeless family. After the family found a house they could afford, they had nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. It took us six weeks to gather all the furniture for the house she found and to decorate it. It was exciting work, but it was a project and, when it was done, I went back Forgotten Harvest. We opened in Chicago this past year and are thankful to have partnered with CB2 (Crate and Barrel) to provide the much needed funding. We are working on our newest site in Dearborn, which will service veterans exclusively. Recently, a Microsoft employee held a fundraiser which provided us funding to expand to Seattle as well. San Diego is our fifth city and is expected to be up and running by the third quarter of this year.

We recycle 500,000 pounds of furniture a year out of our Pontiac location alone. Our challenge was simply managing and moving all that furniture! We are lucky to have partnered with U-Haul who has provided their trucks and donated warehouse space.

After Irish immigrants Catherine and William McGillin opened the Bell in Hand Tavern in 1860, it gradually became known only as “McGillin’s” by regulars. You’ll find every liquor license since 1871, the year that construction on Philadelphia’s City Hall started just two blocks from the establishment, hanging on the wall. In 2007, the national trade magazine Nightclub and Bar included McGillin's in its Editors' Choice Top 100 bars and clubs in the United States. McGillin’s once again served green beer, in an unsuccessful effort to replicate the Eagles’ win of 2018.

Deux Cheminees and Strawbridge & Clothiers signs added to McGillin’s collection. The former opened in 1970s and the latter in 1868. A fire started in McGillin’s 2nd floor kitchen and burned down the 3rd & 4th floors. Fortunately, there was minimal damage to the 1st floor tavern. The band was playing “Light My Fire” as smoke filled the room and the crowd left in an orderly fashion, some even stopping to blow out the candles on their tables. In 2016 we installed a sprinkler system to ensure we’ll be around for years to come.

Awesome Tree House

Another creative house built by DiddiHD, this one flies the infamous black and white skull and crossbones of piracy. This pirate base is made almost entirely from various kinds of wood, but the intricacy of its layout and structure provides a lot of hidden depth and complexity. If you're after inspiration for a slightly larger base, then take a look at this marvellous fantasy mansion from YouTuber BigTonyMC.

Not only that but there is so much detail that’s been put into this awesome piece. If you’re in the mood to build a cottage, this little cub cottage is perfect. It may not be as little as you’d like, but you can definitely adjust the size to your liking. You can’t deny that this castle build is absolutely epic and would be a real challenge to recreate. Unfortunately, there is no tutorial for this build, but I hope it has inspired you in some way.

In addition, it consists of an 8-by-9 block base layout that fills in the fundamental format. You then have to raise 7-block tall walls using any wood-based material of your liking. This design by A1MOSTADDICTED MINECRAFT uses stripped spruce logs as its primary block of choice. The smoother wooden texture gives the whole build a more natural feel, and the cylindrical structure makes it look like it was hollowed out of an already existing tree.

You’ll need to install a texture pack mod to get the exact same look as HALNY’s creation. This idea is particularly beginner friendly and won’t require a ton of resources. One such modern and compact house idea comes from YouTuber Random Steve Guy’s tutorial.

Norwegian Cruise Line Stock Price NCLH Stock Quote, News, and History

norwegian cruise stock

Coronavirus-induced changes in consumer behavior with regard to travel had altered the economic performance of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, affecting its ability to generate excess economic rents. However, as consumers returned to cruising after the 15-month sailing halt that ended in July 2021, they regained their appetite for travel, bolstered by the value proposition the holiday provides. With ships fully deployed at historical occupancy levels, pricing surpassed prepandemic levels in 2023, and pricing momentum has persisted into 2024. While Norwegian could intermittently see pricing competition in periods of macroeconomic distress, we believe its freestyle offering and attractive itineraries will keep passengers engaged with the brand.

The company’s total debt rose to about $11.8 billion at the end of 2020, up from around $6.8 billion at the end of 2019. That said, the stock still remains down by about 50% from its pre-Covid highs, making the risk to reward proposition relatively attractive for investors. Norwegian raised its forecasts Q EPS guidance to 12 cents versus a loss of 20 cents consensus estimates. Full-year 2024 EPS is expected to be around $1.23 versus $1.13 consensus estimates. The company entered 2024 with all-time highs in booked position and pricing for its 2024 voyages.

Advanced ticket sales balance ended the year at $3.2 billion, up 52% from the end of 2019. Also, given a -5% movement for the stock over 5 trading days, it has historically witnessed an excess return of 1.8% compared to the S&P500 over the next 21 trading days, with a 51.2% percent probability of a positive excess return. Now while cruising from the U.S. ports is set to resume this July, we still think that 2021 is likely to be a relatively slow year for Norwegian. Norwegian will likely miss out out on much of the lucrative summer cruising season and it’s also possible that older customers - who are a key demographic - will take a wait and watch approach to cruising post the pandemic. That said, 2022 is looking much stronger, with consensus estimates pointing to revenues of $6 billion, just slightly below the $6.5 billion in revenue the company posted in 2019.

Net yield is expected to rise 5.5% as reported and nearly 5.4% constant currency versus 2023. The company announced it had ordered 8 new cruise ships for its 3 brands to be delivered over 10 years. At the center of everything we do is a strong commitment to independent research and sharing its profitable discoveries with investors. This dedication to giving investors a trading advantage led to the creation of our proven Zacks Rank stock-rating system. Since 1988 it has more than doubled the S&P 500 with an average gain of +24.15% per year.

For example, a cruise that lasts up to 24 days earns one credit, cruises for days receive two credits, and trips longer than 158 days get 15 credits. Those who want to make like Magellan can book the 180-day around-the-world cruise starting at $48,499. Suites will increase the cost of the cruise but add more space for you to relax in your cabin. It focuses on travelers who want more privacy and personalized service when they sail. Oceania sits between its two sibling lines — the higher-end Regent Seven Seas and family-friendly Norwegian — when it comes to ship size and prices.

Luggage Valet Service

I can attest to the speed of Oceania's premium plan after attending a 90-minute Zoom meeting with only the slightest of lag. Crew gratuities are added to your onboard bill and amount to $18 per person, per day, in Concierge-class rooms and below, or $23 per person, per day, in upper-level suites. You are always welcome to tip above the auto-gratuity for exceptional service. I tried a "drip technique" painting class where we decorated glass plates, and it was a far cry from the watercolor or needlepoint classes you might find on other ships. The two-part class explored a unique technique, and even though I'm not experienced in crafting and my plate looked pretty bad after the first class, the artist knew what he was doing, and my final product was surprisingly good. It's also a fun way to socialize with other passengers and the artists in residence.

Is everything free on Oceania cruises?

Where Oceania excels in onboard activities are with cooking classes and demos in the Culinary Center and art classes at the Artist Loft. Sign up as soon as you get on board because these popular classes fill up quickly. Be careful — it's so fun trying out all the crazy concoctions that you might bust your drink budget if you haven't upgraded to the premium beverage package. Vista's bars are hopping before and after dinner because there's not much else to do on board at night.

About Oceania Cruises

In terms of hardware, Vista is one fine ship, which rivals the vessels belonging to luxury lines like Silversea Cruises and Seabourn, even nipping at the heels of over-the-top sister line Regent Seven Seas Cruises. It's in the "software," so to speak, where the line relegates itself to the upscale sector. Some people love to return again and again to their favorite restaurants; others prefer to try a new venue every time. I fall into the latter category, so I loved that I could eat at a different restaurant each night of my cruise on Vista. We gawked at the beautifully designed public spaces, with their detail-oriented accents, eye-catching light fixtures and highly textured materials.

Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. As a result, the line typically offers around a dozen South America cruise departures in any given year out of such cities as Rio de Janeiro; Santiago, Chile; Buenos Aires; Lima, Peru; and Miami. Oceania typically bases just one ship in South America each year and only for about five months in the winter.

In December 2016, the company's owner NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings) received permission to operate cruises to Cuba, with two Oceania ships - Marina (starting at the end of 2016) and Regatta (starting in 2017). Cuba currently lacks the infrastructure to support large cruise ships, so the 684-passenger Regatta and 1,258-passenger Marina are small enough to work with what exists there now. Both ships sail a variety of itineraries, including a circumnavigation of Cuba (with stops in Cienfuegos and Havana) and visiting Cuba as part of some Panama Canal transition cruises. The new Allura ship's inaugural cruise program was announced in September 2023.

Now customers (travel agents and cruise passengers) can use shipboard credits before departure. OBC can be used for purchasing tours/excursions and shipboard activities and amenities (culinary classes, drink packages, specialty dining at the Privee and La Reserve). In September 2018, Oceania partnered with Luggage Forward (USA-based luggage shipping company).

Itinerary of Oceania Cruises

Heartened, my husband and I decided to brave the rain and set out in search of life-changing pizza. Crew members are professional and polite, and they know their product and customers thoroughly. Special requests and personal preferences are a hallmark of the staff in restaurants. The notable exception is poolside, where there don't seem to be enough cocktail servers to keep up with passenger demand. Vista's top-end suites are a sight to behold, including the three mammoth Owner's Suites that take up the entire width of the aft portions of Decks 8, 9 and 10 and span a whopping 2,400 square feet apiece.

Most of them are American, with Canadians, Brits and Australians rounding out the mix, but passengers from many other countries often sail. You'll also find a few families onboard during the summer and around the holidays, when kids are free from the shackles of school. That's because dining and cuisine are deeply entwined with the ship and its programming. Cuisine is an art form onboard, with attention given to even the smallest details, from idea to execution. Menus are vast and balanced; even people who don't think of themselves as foodies will be happy with the selection. Vista, like all Oceania Cruises vessels, draws a mostly English-speaking passenger that typically hails from North America.

For round-trip sailings out of U.S. homeports, a birth certificate and government photo ID will suffice. It's up to each passenger to determine if any of the ports of call require additional visas. The Martini Bar is the most happening lounge, located near the Grand Dining Room, several specialty restaurants and the casino. You can find all your standard mixed drinks here, as well as a special martini menu. In addition to not offering truly all-inclusive fares, Vista doesn't offer the personal, often fawning service you find on true luxury lines. The chefs weren't offering to make me dishes off-menu, and on occasion, I had to work to flag down a waiter to bring me a drink.

Nearly all specialty restaurants (minus La Reserve) do not have a cover charge. You will need to pay for alcoholic drinks, self-service laundry, shore excursions, Wi-Fi and gratuities. Oceania sailings include accommodations, shore excursions, port shuttles, activities, food and most beverages, specialty dining and entertainment. Not included in the fare are some beverage packages, gratuities, spa treatments, laundry and specialty excursions.

All bookings on pre-scheduled itineraries (departures March 15, 2020, through May 31, 2021) were given the option to cancel (up to 48 hours prior departure) without penalties. The "Wavenet Prime" (Internet upgrade) is available for purchase at USD 10 pp per day. Works on the fleetwide refurb project involved over 1000 artisans and craftsmen and resulted in 1368 new cabins, 8000 new light fixtures, new sofas and chairs. In August 2018 was announced OceaniaNEXT fleet renovation project budgeted USD 100 million.
